Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then located many other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations show the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative said the incident left him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
